WAR MEDALS
Each time the United States has been involved in a major conflict, Congress has approved the institution of certain service medals synonymous with each specific war. Some medals are issued by the U.S Government and some are approved for issue from foreign governments. Oftentimes, medals are awarded long after the engagement is over, but become retroactive to the period of time the war was actively being fought. Two examples include the World War II Victory Medal instituted in 1945 retroactive to 1941 and most recently, the Korean War Service Medal which was approved for wear in 1999, but retroactive to 1953. In order to help you determine which medals you or your veteran may qualify for, we have listed the major wars in which the U.S. has been involved and the medals awarded during each. This listing is intended as a guide and does not mean every veteran qualifies for every medal. |
