VIETNAM

National Defense      Vietnam Service    RVN Gallantry Cross   RVN Civl Action    Vietnam Campaign

The official policy of the United States regarding Vietnam was that the government of South Vietnam should remain free and non-communist - very much like its position towards South Korea in 1950.  Military and Political advisors had been serving in South Vietnam since 1958 and a gradual build-up of these forces eventually took place.  By 1962 the United States was commited to a war that would last until 1973, a war that would cost over 50,000 American lives.

National Defense Service Medal - Authorized on April 22, 1953, this medal was awarded for honorable active service as a member of the United States Armed Forces, including the Coast Guard, between January 1, 1961 and August 14, 1974.  This period would represent the second time the medal would be issued.  Personnel who were already in possession of the medal for the Korean War would place a 3/16th bronze service star on the ribbon to denote second award.

Vietnam Service Medal - Authorized on July 8, 1965 and awarded to all service members of the United States Armed Forces who, between July 4, 1965 and March 28, 1973, served in Vietnam and the contiguous waters and airspace, in Thailand, Laos or Cambodia or airspace in direct support of military operations in Vietnam.

Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross - Established on August 15, 1950 as an award for outstanding bravery by officers and enlisted men who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry in action at the risk of life.  It corresponds to the French Croix de Guerre.  It was also issued as a unit award with bronze palm and gold frame device.

Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Service - Instituted in 1964 and awarded to the RVN Armed Forces and foreign military personnel or units that performed outstanding achievements in the field of civil actions.  It was also issued as a unit award with bronze palm and gold frame device.

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal - Established on May 12, 1964 by the Government of the Republic Vietnam and authorized for award to members of the United States Armed Forces by the Department of Defense on June 20, 1966.  To be eligible, the service member must have served for a six-month period in Vietnam, its surrounding waters, or in air support against an armed enemy in Vietnam between March 1, 1966 and March 28, 1973.  The time limit is waived if the recipient was killed, wounded, or captured at any time before the time limit.
