THE SPANISH AMERICAN WARS
China Relief Nicaragua Camp Spanish Camp Indian Wars Haitian Camp West Indies Camp
Before 1908, there was no comprehensive awards program established to recognize participation in battle or to reward soldiers for their actions in combat. President Theodore Roosevelt, who had participated in what he termed the "Bully Little Wars," enacted legislation to recognize participation in the Spanish American War, and other campaigns. This same legislation included recognition for participation in campaigns including the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Boxer Rebellion, the Philippine Insurrection, Haiti, and several other campaigns taking place around the turn of the century. And so, the first United States formal awards program was started. The medals described and pictured on this page are still available for sale. China Relief Expedition Medal - Instituted in 1908. Awarded to officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps who served ashore in China between May 24, 1900 and May 27, 1901. Nicaraguan Campaign Medal - Instituted in 1913. Awarded to officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps who served ashore or on the eight ships of the expedition from August 28 to November 2, 1912. Spanish Campaign Medal - Instituted in 1908. Awarded to officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps for service afloat in the theater of active naval operations, or on shore in Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines or Guam between May and August 16, 1898. Indian Wars Medal - Instituted in 1907. Awarded to members of the army who served in any of twelve different major campaigns against hostile Indians from 1865 to 1891, and in such minor campaigns against hostiles as approved by the Army. Haitian Campaign Medal - Instituted in 1917. Awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps who served in Haiti, or were attached to specified ships, between July 9 and December 5, 1915. West Indies Campaign Medal - Instituted in 1908. Awarded to officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps for service aboard ships in the West Indies during the Spanish-American War. This medal was rarely awarded because the recipients would have been entitled to the Naval Campaign Medal and the two awards could not be given for the same service. For this reason the medal was later discontinued. |
