KOREAN WAR

National Defernse       Korean Service      UN Service Korea    Korean War Service

The war in Korea began with the North Korean invasion of South Korea on June 27, 1950.  The United States decided to send troops to aid the South Koreans, and on July 7th the United Nations adopted a resolution that would make this conflict a test of powers of the U.N. to halt and repel aggression against any member states.  China entered the War in November to save the North Koreans, who had been beaten and lost most of their territory.  In September, 1951, the Korean War had reached a stalemate and became a war of the trenches and outposts, similar to World War I.  The situation continued for two more desperate, bloody and costly years until a truce was signed on June 27, 1953.  The medals pictured above were issued for service during the period of the Korean War and are still available for purchase.

National Defense Service Medal - Authorized on April 22, 1953, this medal was awarded for honorable active service as a member of the United States Armed Forces, including the Coast Guard, between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954 (Korean War period).  This would be the first of four periods in which the medal would be issued.

Korean Service Medal - Authorized on November 8, 1950 and awarded to members of the United States armed forces for thirty consecutive days of service in Korea between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954.  Also awarded to certain ships in Korean waters, units engaged in aerial missions over Korea, and units in direct support of the effort.

United Nations Service Medal for Korea - Authorized by the United Nations General Assembly on December 12, 1950, and authorized for United States armed forces personnel on November 27, 1951.  Awarded to members of the armed forces who participated in United Nations actions in Korea between June 27, 1950 and July, 1954.

Korean War Service Medal - Established in 1951 by the Government of the Republic of Korea, however not accepted and instituted by the U.S. government until 1999, for presentation to foreign military personnel who served on or over the Korean Peninsula or in its territorial waters between June 27, 1950 and July, 1953.  To be eligible, U.S. military personnel must have been on permanent assignment or temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days within the territorial limits of Korea, in the waters surrounding Korea or in aerial flight over Korea participating in actual combat operations or in support of combat operations.
